Reciting Ghazal, Qawwali, and Na‘t Before a Sermon
Question
In our country, before the lecture at a gathering, they recite ghazal (lyrical poetry), qawwali (Sufi devotional singing with music), na‘t (poetry in praise of the Prophet ﷺ) and the like. What is the ruling on this?
Answer
Reciting na‘t is permitted; it is established from Hazrat Hassan ﵁ and other noble Companions. Qawwali is not permitted; the Fatawa Bazzaziyya records it as impermissible.
