What to Do If One's Parents Prevent Him from Religious Knowledge
Question
Zayd is pursuing religious studies, and his inclination is toward the Deobandis; his father and close relatives try to stop him from this. In such a situation, if Zayd complies with the command of his father and close relatives, is this action of Zayd’s the better course or not? That is all. Wa’s-salam.
Answer
Acquiring knowledge to the extent that it is needed is obligatory (fard) upon every person. If the parents prevent him from this, then obedience to the parents is not obligatory upon Zayd — rather, it is impermissible. The Master of Creation ﷺ said that obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator is not permissible.
