Inquiring whether the giver’s property is unlawful or lawful

Question

Question: If someone gives something by way of a present (hadiyya), is it permissible to ask him whether this thing is unlawful or lawful — that is, to inquire about this thing — or not?

Answer

If there is doubt as to whether it is unlawful or lawful, then inquiring in order to remove that doubt is correct; but inquiring without reason, in such a way that it hurts him, should not be done.
