Performing Tawaf al-Ziyarah and Returning to Mina Is Preferable

Question

(1) If tawaf al-ziyarah is performed later while one is staying in Mina — what is preferable: to remain in Mina, or to go to Mecca, perform tawaf al-ziyarah, and then return to Mina? Which method is better? (2) Is staying in Mina obligatory? That is, is it permissible on the day of departure to throw pebbles at the Jamarat and leave for Mecca without returning? Or should one return to Mina and stay there after tawaf al-ziyarah? Which method is better?

Answer

It is preferable to perform tawaf al-ziyarah on the tenth day (of Dhul-Hijjah) and then return to Mina. It is also permissible to remain in Mina on the tenth and eleventh, and then proceed to Makkah al-Mukarramah on the twelfth to perform the tawaf.
