The ruling on property bought with unlawful income

Question

Question: (1) In Zayd’s clan (qabila) there is trade in wine. Zayd wants to live a religious life, but his close relatives are involved in this trade; however, some of them, having repented in order to live a religious life, have started another trade with the money of this trade — a house, farming and the like. Will this trade of his be permissible, and will it be permissible for Zayd to visit these relatives and to eat and drink with them? (2) The children of these people study with Zayd.

Answer

(1) By mere repentance the wealth has not become pure; rather, giving all of that wealth, or its amount, in sadaqa is wajib. However, if land was bought with that very wealth, or some permissible trade is being carried on with it, then the income of that land and trade will be halal, and eating and drinking with them and visiting them will also be permissible.
