A spiritual practice for a stolen item
Question
If something has been stolen from a person and he performs some ʿamal (spiritual practice) — whether by magic or from the Holy Qur’an — so that his item may be found, what is the ruling?
Answer
Reciting Qur’anic verses and making duʿa, or asking someone else to make duʿa — “O Allah, let my item be found” — is permissible; a duʿa is also established in the noble hadith. Sorcery (sihr), however, is not permissible.
