The handshake (musafaha)

Question

What is the definition of the handshake (musafaha), and how many ways of doing it are there? According to the Shariʿa, how many ways of it can there be? And which of them is the best?

Answer

Joining the inner side (batn) of the right hand to the inner side of the other person’s right hand, and joining the left hand of each of the two to the back (zahr) of the other’s right hand — this is musafaha. This is the sunna. At times it is also established with the right hand alone. So it is in Sharh al-Tirmidhi.
