Eating “snake’s umbrella” (mushrooms)
Question
Question: In these areas, during the rainy days, something very white springs up in the shape of an umbrella on embankments or in fields; it is called “masth” (a local name for a mushroom). Is it permissible to eat it or not? Kindly inform us of the Shari‘a ruling.
Answer
It is of two kinds: the juice of one is beneficial for the eye, and that of the other is harmful. Eating the beneficial one is permissible; eating the harmful one is not permissible.
