Killing a dog or a cat

Question: If a cat or a dog causes someone excessive damage, is it permissible to kill that cat or dog or not?

Answer

It is better not to kill it; but if protecting oneself from the damage becomes difficult, then killing it is permissible. However, killing it by tormenting it slowly is bad.
