Joint purchase of a microphone and a gramophone by a Muslim and a non-Muslim
Question
Question: If a Muslim and a non-Muslim together buy a loudspeaker with a gramophone in joint ownership in order to earn income by hiring them out — the Muslim earning income by hiring them out for his gatherings, and the non-Muslim collecting payment by operating them at plays, weddings and the like, and taking it himself — and they divide the earnings from both kinds, is this permissible or not? And if the owners are Muslims only and they hire these things out to a Hindu, how is that?
Answer
Buying both these things jointly together in this way is not permissible. If, by mutual settlement, the gramophone is given to the non-Muslim and the Muslim keeps the loudspeaker himself — even if some cash has to be paid as well — that is better. Then let him take the loudspeaker to permissible gatherings and speeches and collect its rent; this income will be permissible.
