Buying and selling dogs
Question
Question: Is the sale of a dog permissible for a Muslim or not? A man keeps a dog and also sells its puppies; in exchange for a puppy he takes a kid goat, then raises that kid and sells it, or from that kid his goats multiply; some of them he sells, he also offers sacrifices from them and gives charity. Is it permissible to do this or not? We have learnt from some quarters that buying and selling a dog is haram. According to whom is it haram, and what is the reason (‘illa) for the prohibition?
Answer
According to Imam al-Shafi‘i ﵀ the dog is intrinsically impure (najis al-‘ayn), and, like the swine, its sale is impermissible. According to Imam Abu Hanifa ﵀ there is no evidence that it is intrinsically impure.
