Selling a turtle
Question
Question: What do the scholars of religion say about this: is it permissible to sell a turtle or not? If it is impermissible and someone has nevertheless sold one, what is the status of its price (thaman)?
Answer
The turtle is not an animal whose meat is eaten (ghayr ma’kul al-lahm), but, unlike the swine, benefiting from it is not prohibited altogether. Hence, if there is some benefit in it, its sale is permissible — just as the sale of the dog, the cheetah and the like is permissible — and making use of the price is proper.
