A Rooster Offered as a Votive Offering
Question
If some animal — for instance a rooster or the like — is passed over animals, or passed over a person’s head, and then set aside, what is the ruling on eating it?
Answer
This is a polytheistic practice; it is called making a votive offering. It is a vow (nadhr) to other than Allah, which falls under the ruling of carrion; eating it is not permissible.
