E927b Carbamide — is it halal?

Ruling: Halal

Description

Carbamide (urea, E927b) — the diamide of carbonic acid; in the EU only sugar-free chewing gum (up to 30 g/kg). Industrially — synthesis from ammonia and CO2 (c1, c2; fossil feedstock); the USA also names cyanamide hydrolysis (c4); a route in methanol (c5, bio-methanol c7); «green» urea from biomass and MSW is not commercial (c3). Formaldehyde in granulation (c6).

Basis of the ruling

Carbamide (urea) is today produced industrially only by synthesis: ammonia is combined with carbon dioxide under pressure, and the ammonia is made from natural gas or coal; in the USA hydrolysis of cyanamide is also named.
