E465 Methyl ethyl cellulose — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

A mixed methyl and ethyl ether of cellulose: a thickener, emulsifier, stabiliser and foaming agent. The raw material is cellulose from fibrous plant material (c1); pulping reagents — c2, sulphites and sulphurous acid — hosts c18–c21, oxalic acid in cellulose washing — c16. Ethyl groups come from ethyl chloride: in China it is mainly made from ethanol (c3), per a US patent and IARC from ethylene (c4).

Basis of the ruling

Methyl ethyl cellulose is a cellulose ether made from fibrous plant material: ethyl groups come from ethyl chloride, methyl groups from methyl chloride or dimethyl sulfate. In China ethyl chloride is mainly made from ethanol and hydrochloric acid, and the source of the ethanol is not named.
