E403 Ammonium alginate — is it halal?
Description
The ammonium salt of alginic acid from brown seaweed: a thickener, stabiliser and gelling agent. Alginic acid (c3) is recovered from the seaweed (c1) with alkali and acid (or via calcium alginate), then neutralised with ammonium hydroxide, carbonate or ammonium salts (c4–c7). Link to alcohol: neutralisation is run in 60–85 % ethanol, and in the fibre patent the product is also washed with it (c9)
