الْحَلَالُ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامُ بَيِّنٌ، وَبَيْنَهُمَا مُشَبَّهَاتٌ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ، فَمَنِ اتَّقَى الْمُشَبَّهَاتِ اسْتَبْرَأَ لِدِينِهِ وَعِرْضِهِ

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Description

Propionic acid is almost entirely petrochemical (Reppe: ethylene + CO + water; propionaldehyde oxidation; propionitrile). Possible links: alcohols as raw material (ethanol — the Larson process per EFSA 2014, not confirmed by BASF or FEEDAP; ethanol and methanol — in Chinese patents); activated carbon of unnamed raw material (bone char not excluded); the fermentation route (allowed in the USA)
