The Holy Quran 6:158 — Surah Al-An'am

Arabic text

هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن تَأْتِيَهُمُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ أَوْ يَأْتِىَ رَبُّكَ أَوْ يَأْتِىَ بَعْضُ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّكَ ۗ يَوْمَ يَأْتِى بَعْضُ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّكَ لَا يَنفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَـٰنُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ ءَامَنَتْ مِن قَبْلُ أَوْ كَسَبَتْ فِىٓ إِيمَـٰنِهَا خَيْرًا ۗ قُلِ ٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مُنتَظِرُونَ

Translation

They (the Kuffaar seem to) wait only for the angels (of death) to come to them (and remove their souls) or for (the punishment of) your Rabb to come or for some of your Rabb's signs (of Qiyaamah) to appear. (They seem to be waiting for these to happen before they accept Imaan. However, they fail to realise that) The day when one of your Rabb's (major) signs (of Qiyaamah) will appear (when the sun rises in the West), the Imaan of a person will not benefit him (will not be accepted) if he did not have Imaan previously (before this sign) or if he did not do any good (act) in his Imaan (but only evil. This means that if a person did have Imaan but committed only evil acts, his repentance will not be accepted once the sun rises from the West). Say, "Keep waiting (for these events to take place)! We are also waiting."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

هل ينتظر الذين أعرضوا وصدوا عن سبيل الله إلا أن يأتيهم ملك الموت وأعوانه لقبض أرواحهم، أو يأتي ربك -أيها الرسول- للفصل بين عباده يوم القيامة، أو يأتي بعض أشراط الساعة وعلاماتها الدالة على مجيئها، وهي طلوع الشمس من مغربها؟ فحين يكون ذلك لا ينفع نفسا إيمانها، إن لم تكن آمنت من قبل، ولا يُقبل منها إن كانت مؤمنة كسب عمل صالح إن لم تكن عاملة به قبل ذلك.
