The Holy Quran 40:21 — Surah Ghafir

Arabic text

۞ أَوَلَمْ يَسِيرُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَيَنظُرُوا۟ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً وَءَاثَارًا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَا كَانَ لَهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَاقٍ

Translation

Do they (the Kuffaar) not travel on earth (to the lands of nations that were destroyed), so they may see what was the plight (end) of those (Kuffaar) before them? Those people were more powerful than them in terms of strength (power), and in terms of the landmarks (monuments) they left behind on earth. Nevertheless, Allaah seized (punished) them on account of their sins. (Despite their great strength and resources), They had none to protect them against (the punishment of) Allaah. (When such powerful nations could not withstand Allaah's punishment, how will the weaker nations of later times withstand it?)

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

أو لم يَسِرْ هؤلاء المكذبون برسالتك -أيها الرسول- في الأرض، فينظروا كيف كان خاتمة الأمم السابقة قبلهم؟ كانوا أشد منهم بطشًا، وأبقى في الأرض آثارًا، فلم تنفعهم شدة قواهم وعِظَم أجسامهم، فأخذهم الله بعقوبته؛ بسبب كفرهم واكتسابهم الآثام، وما كان لهم من عذاب الله من واق يقيهم منه، فيدفعه عنهم.
