The Holy Quran 12:80 — Surah Yusuf

Arabic text

فَلَمَّا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسُوا۟ مِنْهُ خَلَصُوا۟ نَجِيًّا ۖ قَالَ كَبِيرُهُمْ أَلَمْ تَعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ أَبَاكُمْ قَدْ أَخَذَ عَلَيْكُم مَّوْثِقًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ مَا فَرَّطتُمْ فِى يُوسُفَ ۖ فَلَنْ أَبْرَحَ ٱلْأَرْضَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْذَنَ لِىٓ أَبِىٓ أَوْ يَحْكُمَ ٱللَّهُ لِى ۖ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ

Translation

When they (the brothers) grew despondent of (convincing) him (Yusuf عليه الصلاة والسلام to do as they requested), they stood aside to consult (with each other about what to do). The eldest of them said, "Do you not know that your father had taken from you a solemn oath from Allaah, and (don't you remember that) before (this) you had failed in your duty towards Yusuf? Now I shall never leave this land (to return home) until my father permits me or (until) Allaah decides my matter (by either taking my life or returning my two lost brothers). He (Allaah) is the best of deciders (judges)."

Tafsir (excerpt) — التفسير الميسر

فلما يئسوا من إجابته إياهم لِمَا طلبوه انفردوا عن الناس، وأخذوا يتشاورون فيما بينهم، قال كبيرهم في السن: ألم تعلموا أن أباكم قد أخذ عليكم العهد المؤكد لتردُّنَّ أخاكم إلا أن تُغلبوا، ومن قبل هذا كان تقصيركم في يوسف وغدركم به; لذلك لن أفارق أرض «مصر»
