Charity besides zakat

Question

After paying zakat, is it obligatory or a sunnah to give ten percent or a similar proportion from the remaining income as charity?

Answer

It is neither obligatory nor a confirmed sunnah (one whose abandonment would lead to blame or punishment). However, in situations of need, spending according to one’s ability and generosity out of selflessness and compassion is among noble moral qualities. Whether it is ten percent or less or more depends on the person’s capacity.
