Paying salaries from mixed zakat and donation funds
Question
In an institution where there is no arrangement for the sums of zakat and donations to be kept separate, but rather they are mixed together, is it correct to pay the salaries of the teachers and employees from this or not? And moreover, no tamlik (transfer of ownership) takes place in the zakat sums — are those zakat sums discharged on behalf of the giver or not?
Answer
Giving zakat money as salary is not permissible. Whatever amount of zakat out of the mixed funds has been given in salaries, that much zakat has not been discharged. The giver should be informed so that he pays that much zakat himself.
