Zakat on the contents of a clinic
Question
I am a physician (practitioner of traditional medicine) and also keep a dispensary. Is zakat on the medicines fard upon me or not? Which of the following is zakat to be given on: the bottles in which the medicines are kept; the bottles kept for giving medicines to patients; and also the table, chairs and cupboard which are for furnishing the clinic?
Answer
On the items that are for furnishing the clinic or for keeping medicines there is no zakat. On the items that are for sale — such as medicines or bottles and the like — zakat is fard, provided they amount to the nisab and a year has passed over them.
