Disciplining a disobedient wife and her maintenance (nafaqa)
Question
My wife does not obey me at all; she talks with men who are strangers to her, laughing and giggling, and goes wherever she pleases without permission. I bring all my income and hand it over to her, yet she curses me and says: “The old man won’t even die.” I am fifty years old and she is forty; we have grown-up children, and the bad talk is affecting them as well. In this situation, what is the ruling of the Shari‘a concerning her?
Answer
Answer (1) — (from Delhi) Such a woman is a nashiza (a recalcitrant wife); she is not entitled to maintenance (nafaqa) and the like until she obeys her husband. Answer (2) — (from Faqih al-Umma) This conduct of the wife towards her husband is blameworthy and vile.
