Zihar
Question
Question: A man came to suspect his wife of zina (adultery) from certain signs. The husband became angry with his wife; the wife asked the reason, the husband explained nothing, and in anger he said only these words: «جا مجھ کو تیری ضرورت نہیں، تو میرے لئے میری ماں بہن جیسی ہے، اور میں تجھ کو طلاق دے چکا» (“Go, I have no need of you; you are to me like my mother, sister; and I have already given you talaq”). By the words he uttered, «تو میرے لئے میری ماں بہن جیسی ہے» (“you are to me like my mother, sister”)
Answer
The husband uttered two expressions: the first entails zihar (likening one’s wife to a woman permanently prohibited to him), and the second entails talaq. Therefore, if he wants to keep her as his wife, he must first perform the expiation (kaffara)
