Is Testimony Required for Talaq?
Question
Question: Must there be witnesses to establish talaq? And is it a condition that the witness be upright (‘adil), or not?
Answer
For establishing it judicially (qada’an), two upright (‘adil) witnesses are a condition; for establishing it religiously (diyanatan), one upright witness suffices — indeed, even the woman’s having heard it herself suffices.
