How Long Should the Miswak Be

Question

Is there any harm (haraj) if the miswak is longer than one span? In a book of fiqh it is written that if it is longer than a span, Satan sits [on it]. And if it is shorter than a span, so that it can be kept in the pocket, is that right? And should one use it for as long as possible, however short it may become?

Answer

The miswak should not be kept longer than one span. At the start it is better for it to be one span long; if it is less, there is no harm in that either. Then, however short it becomes, as long as it remains usable, it should be used.
