Wiping over a Nylon Sock

Question

Here in Kashmir it gets extremely cold; at night the temperature drops to zero degrees. In such a situation, is wiping over a nylon sock permissible? In Ta‘lim al-Islam only thick woollen [and] cotton socks are mentioned, in which one can walk three miles; a nylon sock fulfils this condition.

Answer

A sock that is not of leather but is so thick that water does not seep through it, and in which walking a full mile on foot is also not difficult — over such a sock too the Shari‘a permits the resident (muqim) to wipe for one day and one night, and the traveller (musafir) for three days and three nights. Editor’s note (tanbih)
