Authorization for Tobacco and Bangle Traders

Question

A guide–disciple relationship exists between Zayd and Bakr. Zayd, owing to weakness, wishes to give two persons from among those close to him the turban-tying ceremony and ijaza (authorization). Both of these persons are constant in the remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and are engaged in the trade of tobacco — smoking and chewing tobacco. Can Zayd give these persons ijaza? They also trade in bangles.

Answer

If Allah the Exalted has blessed them with noble character, righteous deeds, and a spiritual connection of ihsan, and firmness has become established in them, then it is correct to make them authorized (majaz). Trading in chewing and smoking tobacco is not haram; it is merely disliked (makruh)
