What the Spiritual Guide Should Be Like and How Bay‘ah Is Taken

Question

What is the procedure for taking bay’ah for a man and for a woman? And to which kind of spiritual guide should one give bay’ah? If a woman takes bay’ah without her husband’s permission, while the husband himself has not yet given bay’ah to anyone, what is the ruling on her doing so?

Answer

The spiritual guide takes the man’s hand in his own hand and has him make repentance (tawba) with the words mentioned in Surah al-Mumtahana; he does not take the woman’s hand in his own hand, but rather, from behind a curtain, has her hold some cloth, a handkerchief, a turban, or the like, and through this has her make repentance.
