Is hunting permissible?
Question
Question: “Hunting is permissible except for amusement (al-talahhi)” — what is meant by talahhi in Shami, vol. 5? If a person goes hunting from time to time for recreation and does not abandon the wajib duties, is it entirely permissible or makruh? And if it is makruh, is it tanzihi or tahrimi?
Answer
By talahhi is meant that a person hunts purely for amusement and play (lahw wa la‘ib), through which time is wasted and animals are made to suffer: he neither eats the meat of these animals, nor puts their bones, horns and the like to use, nor kills them to protect crops and the like, but kills them purely for recreation. Hunting of this kind is haram.
