What Should One Do If Unable to Fast Because of Herding Goats?

Question

Since herding goats is very hard work — a man is 45 years old, and this work requires a great deal of running about and toil — may he miss the fasts of blessed Ramadan because of herding goats?

Answer

If he cannot bear the fast, then he should keep the qada (make-up) fasts outside Ramadan on those days on which he can bear it. “Cannot bear it” means that there is a preponderant likelihood (zann ghalib) that from hunger and thirst he will perish or lose his senses.
