Permission for a Traveller to Break an Obligatory Fast

Question

Zayd made the intention (niyya) for an obligatory (fard) fast, and part of the day had passed when, as it happened, he set out on a journey; the journey is quite long. May Zayd break this fast?

Answer

If there is hardship (mashaqqa) and completing it is difficult, then he may break it.
