Paying Fidya During Life for Prayers Missed Due to Illness

Question

If a person misses prayers and cannot perform them due to weakness or illness, can their expiation (fidya) be paid instead, and will that suffice?

Answer

Fidya cannot be paid during a person’s lifetime for missed prayers. He must perform the missed prayers (qada) according to his ability: if he cannot pray standing, he should pray sitting, if he cannot pray sitting, he should pray lying down, in any case he should pray in whatever way he is capable.
