The imamate of one who does not pray tarawih

Question

There is a hafiz who does not remember [the Qur’an] completely, never prays tarawih and is deaf, yet he always leads the Friday prayer (jumu‘a) and the two ‘Id prayers. Is the prayer behind such an imam valid or not?

Answer

If he leads the prayer in the correct manner, then the prayer is fulfilled behind him as well; however, he ought to withdraw from the imamate himself. Permanently abandoning tarawih is abandoning a sunna, the outcome of which is divine reproach.
