Imamate of the mosque attendant and the mu’adhdhin

Question

A certain imam is permanent; he also performs the cleaning work and the duties of the mu’adhdhin. For cleaning the mosque, cleaning the washrooms and the like, he takes a separate wage. Is prayer behind such an imam, who is also the mu’adhdhin, valid?

Answer

It is permissible (ja’iz). [ar]الْأَفْضَلُ كَوْنُ الْإِمَامِ هُوَ الْمُؤَذِّنَ[/ar] “It is best that the imam himself be the mu’adhdhin” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar, vol. 1, p. 268).
