The intention in prayer

Is the intention necessary in prayer or not?

Answer

The intention is necessary in prayer, that is, one should firmly settle in the heart: “I am performing the fard or sunna prayer of such-and-such time.” If one prays behind an imam, one should also make the intention of following the imam (iqtida’).
