Solving a newspaper puzzle

Question: What is the ruling on filling in a newspaper’s prize puzzle, obtaining the prize and spending it on some mosque, a madrasa of religious studies, or some other cause in the path of Allah?

Answer

Write out its full description. If the situation is that it was published in a newspaper that whoever explains the meaning of such-and-such a thing, or solves such-and-such a problem, will be given such-and-such a prize, and then someone solved it and received the prize, then this prize is his property; he has the choice to use it for his own needs or to spend it on a mosque…
