The Prohibition of Compiling Hadiths

Question

Question: I, the humble one, learned from a relative of mine (who is studying at Dar al-Ulum Deoband) that you answer questions concerning matters of religion. For a long time I had been wishing to learn of such a capable person to whom I might turn to reconsider my dangerous ideas. I thank God a hundred thousand times that I have come to know a capable person like you, who has made serving the community his habit. Some time ago I read, in a library in Malegaon, a book called “Radd-e-Islam” (“Refutation of Islam”).

Answer

Honoured and respected Zayd, al-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh! Your letters reveal the depth of your feelings — the feelings of one in whose heart there burns a passion for the reform of Muslims, while he himself is devoid of the means of reform, and who, regarding everyone as misguided, has become disappointed with and distrustful of all.
