Attending a Wedding Held with Borrowed Money
Question
Zayd’s daughter has come of age. Zayd is a poor man; wherever a proposal is discussed, everyone says, “We will take a watch, we will take a bicycle,” and they demand many things. No man lives in the house, and there is fear lest some disgrace occur. On one side the daughter is grown up, on the other there is poverty; under compulsion Zayd took a loan and held the wedding. Many religious scholars of the village have turned against Zayd and forbid attending this wedding. How far is Zayd at fault in this?
Answer
If there is nothing contrary to the Shari‘a at this function — dancing, music and the like — then attendance is not forbidden merely because a loan was taken; everyone may attend.
