Nikah for a Mahr Greater than That for Which the Girl Appointed Her Agent

Question

A girl appointed a man as her agent (wakil) to marry her to a certain person for a mahr of five hundred rupees. But on the advice of the groom’s side a thousand rupees was fixed, which the girl accepted, and the nikah was performed on a mahr of a thousand rupees. Is this nikah valid or not?

Answer

The nikah is valid. If the girl dislikes the mahr of a thousand and insists on five hundred only, let her remit the rest.
