Voting for a Shi‘i
Question
Question: Is it permissible or not to give one’s vote for membership (of an elected body) in favour of an enemy of the noble Companions ﵃, when his rival is a Shari‘a-observing adherent of Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a who is regular in fasting and prayer? And what is the fatwa regarding those persons who are helpers and abettors in this evil?
Answer
For one’s representation one should give one’s opinion (vote) to such a person as can properly voice and represent the people of Islam in religious, social and political respects. And whoever, contrary to this, gives his vote to such a person from whom this cannot be expected, but rather harm is feared from him, is in error and, on account of this assistance, will be sinful.
