Voting in Return for a Promise of Waqf
Question
Question: Zayd, for the sake of his membership (of an elected body), wants to obtain votes in his favour from some (?) Muslims, and says that in return he will carry out some improvement, repairs, etc. of the mosque, will build some building for the expenses of the mosque, and will make its income — the rent — a waqf for the mosque. Is it permissible to accept help for the mosque and to have it built from such money?
Answer
If Zayd is truly worthy of membership, then he should be given the vote and made a member; and if Zayd, with the intention of reward (thawab) — even if it be in gratitude for the membership — has the mosque built or makes something a waqf, then there is no harm in this; rather, it is a cause of reward.
