The ruling on saying “I am an Indian first and a Muslim afterwards”
Question
Zayd says: “First I am a Muslim, and after that anything else.” And Bakr says: “First I am an Indian, and after that a Muslim.” Bakr is also connected with a political party.
Answer
One’s bond with Islam is such that at no time is there any room to abandon it and adopt another religion: [ar]وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمِ دِينًا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ[/ar] “Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers” (Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:85).
