Placing flowers on graves
Question
What is the ruling on placing flowers on a grave? From a passage in Radd al-Muhtar, it appears that it is permissible. The text states: “Placing flowers on a grave is better because as long as they remain fresh they glorify Allah, and the deceased is comforted.” (Radd al-Muhtar) Likewise, placing a flower cloth over the funeral bier is said to be permissible.
Answer
The passage from Radd al-Muhtar cited as proof actually refers to cutting grass from the graveyard, not placing flowers. The original wording states: It is disliked to cut fresh plants or grass from the cemetery, unlike dry plants. (mentioned in al-Bahr, al-Durr, and Sharh al-Muniyah)
