Insulting the Scholars

Question

If a person is insolent towards the scholars and holds an ill opinion of them, what is the ruling on such a person in the Sacred Law?

Answer

If he demeans and degrades the scholars on account of their religious knowledge, it is kufr, and renewal of iman and renewal of marriage are obligatory; otherwise it is wickedness (fisq), and repentance is necessary. In “Shami”: [ar]إِهَانَةُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ كُفْرٌ عَلَى الْمُخْتَارِ[/ar] (“Insulting the people of knowledge is kufr according to the preferred view”)
