A Wife’s Letter to Her Husband Containing Words of Kufr
Question
Zayd and Hind are husband and wife. Hind writes Zayd the following letter, whose wording and content are these: “Dear Zayd! ……… As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. After greetings I submit: you say that when you come home no one talks to you. No one will talk to you until you learn the trade. Learn the trade fully, trim your beard and shorten your shirt, because you look like a complete old man and not good at all; that is why everyone shrinks from you. You look like a sadhu (a Hindu ascetic).
Answer
On the basis of this writing of Hind’s, the marriage has not ended and Hind has not left Zayd’s wedlock; nor is a second marriage contract needed — the first marriage remains. The letter she wrote is the effect of ignorance and environment; she needs teaching and explanation.
