Verbal abuse
Question
Question: In our biradari (kin community) a wedding took place with non-Shari‘a customs and with drums and music. Now, because of this marriage tie, four brothers — Muhammad Bashir, Gulab al-Din, ‘Abd al-Khaliq and Muhammad Sadiq, sons of Nasir al-Din — abuse one another, hurling abuse at mothers and fathers. Foremost among them: Muhammad Sadiq abuses the wife of ‘Abd al-Khaliq, and ‘Abd al-Khaliq abuses the wife of Muhammad Sadiq.
Answer
Verbal abuse and slandering someone’s wife, and especially abusing one’s elder brother, is extremely evil according to the Shari‘a. It is necessary to seek forgiveness for it, and henceforth to abstain from it completely. It is stated in the hadiths that abusing a Muslim is fisq (transgression), and that this is a sign of a hypocrite (thus in Muslim).
