How to obtain forgiveness for backbiting
Question
A man backbit another; if, when asked for forgiveness, the other does not forgive, what way of making amends can there be?
Answer
It is necessary to relate in detail to the person who was backbitten the words that were said about him in his absence, and to ask his forgiveness sincerely — there is no other way. However, if there is fear that the detailed account will cause harm, he should ask forgiveness in general terms (for example, by saying: “Forgive me whatever wrong I have done”).
