Educational cards

Question

Is it permissible to play with educational cards or not? If it is permissible, is it without karaha (disapproval) or with karaha; and if it is impermissible, is it makruh tahrimi or haram?

Answer

If children are made to use these cards for learning to recognise letters, then in itself it is proper, just as one writes on a board and has them learn recognition and practise. But the fear is that this very game will later become a means to card-playing for winning and losing, and will lead to other wrong things, such as solving prize puzzles and the like.
